The Best Three Years

The last three years have been some of the best of my life.  I do have some amazing memories from fifth grade: winning 2nd place at world competition with my Odyssey of the Mind team (I was a little bit of a nerd…a creative nerd), scars from pencil fights with cute boys (they still had cooties), and a family trip to the mountains of Tennessee.  My freshman year of college also come in as a runner up: late nights laughing so hard it hurts, meeting some of my best friends, and avoiding all the reading and studying my friend were doing and instigating them to do the same.  However, nothing really compares with the time I’ve spent married to Darren Goodrich.  This week we celebrated our third anniversary.  We’ve had our ups and downs for sure, but there’s just something to be said for someone who knows you better than you know yourself.  And he sure had me in mind when he planned our surprise anniversary day of fun!

Six envelopes, each holding a clue and a map leading to a new adventure.  The first envelope led us to Ye Old Waffle House in Chapel Hill where we thoroughly enjoyed our fill of M&M pancakes and Reese’s Pieces waffles.  I highly recommend the waffles! Our next stop took us to the Tyndall Galleries where Gayle Stott Lowry’s paintings from Iceland were on exhibit.  I never knew how many small art galleries there are in Chapel Hill! Envelope #3 brought us to Sugarland, “Because Life is Sweet.”  Sugarland is exactly what is sounds like…a shop dedicated to serving sugary goodness like gelato, award winning cupcakes, and they also design beautiful wedding cakes.  We tried six flavors of gelato in all: watermelon, lemon, coconut, passion fruit, pomegranate, and mango.  Side note: Candy bars have become a big trend at weddings and I totally think that gelato bars could be next big hit for summer weddings!  We moved on to the Ackland Art Museum on the UNC campus.  This is a great gallery in the heart of Chapel Hill with some interesting 20th century and Asian art on exhibit.  Envelope #5 took us to The Top of the Hill restaurant for a dinner overlooking Franklin Street.  And of course, if you know my husband at all, you know he doesn’t keep a secret well when he is prodded for an answer…so I knew about the last envelope all day, the map took us back to our house after a wonderful day exploring some of the best kept secrets of Chapel Hill.
